The short answer
If your garage door sticks, grinds, or hangs crooked at one spot every time it runs, a track is bent or has pulled loose from its mounting. Most of the time it's one of three things: something hit the track, the mounting hardware worked loose over years of vibration, or humidity and salt air corroded the brackets and rollers enough that the door is no longer riding true. Left alone, a misaligned track doesn't just make noise — it forces the opener and springs to work against resistance they weren't built for, which shortens the life of both.
What you'll notice first
- A hesitation or grinding sound at the same point in the door's travel, every single cycle
- A visible gap between a roller and the track, especially near the top where the curve starts
- The door hangs crooked when fully open, or one side looks lower than the other
- Uneven speed — one side of the door seems to drop or rise faster than the other
- The opener reverses on its own partway through closing, even though nothing is blocking the sensors
- Rollers jump the rail entirely, leaving daylight between the door edge and the track
Any of these on their own is worth a look. More than one at the same time usually means the misalignment has been building for a while.
How a technician works through the causes
1. Impact damage
This gets ruled in or out first because it's visible. A car bumper, a stray ball, a ladder leaned against the rail, or storm debris during an afternoon downpour can put a kink in aluminum track in seconds. A shallow bend can sometimes be worked back into shape with the right tools. A sharp kink, a crack, or anything bent more than a few inches usually gets replaced outright — trying to straighten it rarely holds, and a weakened track under wind load during hurricane season is not where you want to find out it failed.
2. Loose mounting hardware
Every track bolts to the frame through brackets, and those bolts vibrate loose over thousands of open-close cycles. This is the most common cause with no obvious impact to explain it. The fix is straightforward: retighten every bolt along both tracks and the rear track hanger, replace any stripped holes with structural screws instead of standard wood screws, and re-shim brackets that have pulled away from the jamb.
3. Worn or wrong rollers
Plastic rollers degrade faster in heat and humidity than most homeowners expect, and metal rollers close to the coast rust from salt air, which changes how they sit in the track and pulls it out of true over time. The fix is replacing worn rollers with nylon rollers rated for humid climates, then lubricating the rail so the new rollers aren't fighting old buildup.
4. Structural shift in the frame
Wood jambs swell and settle with Florida humidity, and a frame that's slightly out of square will drag a track out of alignment even if the track itself is fine. A tech checks this by measuring the opening against the track position. The fix involves re-shimming the jamb, repositioning brackets, and re-squaring the track to the door rather than just the wall.
5. Spring imbalance
A broken or unevenly tensioned spring makes one side of the door travel faster than the other, and that uneven pull stresses the track mounts over time, bending brackets even when the track itself started out fine. This is spring repair territory, and because torsion springs are under heavy tension, it's not a DIY fix.
6. A cable off the drum
If a cable slips off its drum, it pulls the door sideways as it moves, and the track takes the strain. The fix is re-seating the cable, checking it for fraying, and replacing it if the strands are compromised.
When to call Melbourne Overhead Door Co
If the door is grinding, hanging crooked, or a roller has jumped the rail, stop running the opener and call us before it gets worse. Our Off Track Door Repair covers everything above, from a simple bracket retighten to a full track replacement after impact damage. If the misalignment traces back to a spring or cable problem, we handle Garage Door Cable Repair and spring work on the same visit so you're not paying for two trips. We also check track alignment as part of routine tune-ups, which is worth scheduling before the next round of storms rolls through the Space Coast.
